Eliminating Food Wastage
Food wastage “eats up” between 25 and 40 per cent of all the food produced in the world each year, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. Putting it simply, food wastage is food that cannot be fed to humans because of problems with our systems of agriculture, food storage, transport, processing or retailing. Food wastage occurs at every level, from the farm to the consumer.
Fresh produce growers / shippers and retailers have an important role to play in fighting food wastage. PrimePro® Shelf Life Extension package helps fight food wastage by:
- Maintaining the freshness of produce during storage, shipping, distribution and retailing,
right into the consumers’ home - Reducing spoilage, waste and discards at all levels of the value chain
- Helping retailers keep produce with short shelf lives (like bananas or strawberries) in saleable
condition for a longer period of time
The recent Save Food Conference, sponsored by United Nations agencies and trade organizations, highlighted the role that packaging technologies like PrimePro® can play in reducing food wastage.
